It’s no secret that flu season is in full swing. This year’s strain is the most widespread case in the 13 years since health officials began tracking the illness. Flu symptoms vary from person to person, but common symptoms to watch out for include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches and fatigue. Besides getting a flu vaccine, there are several preventative actions you can take to avoid contracting the flu. When you cough or sneeze, be sure to cover your mouth. If you do contract the flu, the Centers for Disease Control recommends staying home for at least 24 hours after your fever has subsided.

Research shows that regular exercise is a key way to maintain optimal health and decreases your risk of getting a cold or the flu. Exercise increases your circulation and blood flow, which results in strengthening your immune system. Antibodies and white blood cells are sent throughout the body during exercise, which act as your defense. Additionally, exercise helps you sweat out toxins and relieve stress. A relaxed, mindful body is less susceptible to falling ill. To accompany exercise, prioritizing nutrition, getting enough sleep, and staying hydrated are other ways to keep your body in excellent shape. Everyone knows that a nutritious diet is essential for maintaining overall health. But, a lesser known fact is that a poor diet actually lowers your immunity and makes your body more vulnerable to illness. Prevent the flu this year by eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins.
