Fueling the Finish Line: From TasteCation to Tokyo

Introduction – Shandrea Middlebrook

As summer winds down and race season begins to ramp up, I find myself reflecting on how food, family, and fitness have all played a role in this season of training. For many runners, August marks the tail end of sweltering long runs, gear testing, and meal prepping—all in the name of being fall-race ready. For me, it’s also a time to check in, reset my habits, and remind myself why I lace up in the first place.

I’m honored to serve as a Run Project Ambassador and frequent volunteer. Run Project consistently embraces runners of all levels and backgrounds and truly highlights what makes this community special. I’ve met so many incredible people—on the course and behind the scenes—who remind me that running is more than a sport; it’s a shared experience that brings people together.

From the Pavement to the Plate

When I’m not running, I’m usually cooking—and not just for myself. TasteCation is a passion project where I channel my love for global food and culture into flavorful, balanced meals for friends, family, and those in need. I believe that food has the power to transport us, heal us, and most importantly—fuel us.

One of my favorite go-to meals during peak training is a simple, nutrient-packed trio:

  • Smoked Turkey Meatballs – lean protein with a bold flavor.
  • Sweet Potato Medley – slow-roasted with olive oil and a hint of smoked paprika.
  • Green Beans – sautéed with garlic for crunch and depth.

It’s a combo that’s easy to prep in advance, reheats well, and delivers thoughtful nutrition—protein, complex carbs, fiber, and micronutrients—all in one satisfying plate.

But TasteCation is about more than macros. I’m inspired by global flavors—like jerk-spiced salmon or slow-simmered roast—that remind me of places I’ve visited and the community I’ve built along the way.

Resetting Your Plate for Fall

August is also the perfect reset moment. As the long, hot days fade, I like to audit my pantry, reintegrate greens, and set a few seasonal nutrition goals.

Try these simple swaps:

  • Ditch sugary sports drinks for coconut water + sea salt.
  • Swap heavy sauces for fresh herb-based dressings (like basil vinaigrette).
  • Add roasted seasonal vegetables—think Brussels sprouts, butternut squash, beets.
  • Make a batch of oats + chia pudding to support hydration and gut health.

These tweaks shift your plate toward fresh, nourishing options that support energy and recovery as training volume evolves and temperatures cool.

More Than Miles: Bringing Others Along

Outside of my own training and cooking, I’m deeply committed to introducing my family to movement—whether that’s evening walks, a local 5K, or just encouraging them to jump in when I race.

And as a frequent Run Project volunteer, I love the energy of cheering on others, handing out cold water, or helping at packet pickup. There’s something magical about being part of a race series that celebrates every participant—regardless of pace, background, or finish time.

What’s Next?

Winter turn toward spring, with my eyes set on major goals:

My immediate focus is the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2, 2025, where I will run for Imerman Angels to honor cancer warriors and survivors.

Then comes the big one: Tokyo Marathon on Sunday, March 1, 2026, where I’ll pursue my fourth Abbott World Marathon Majors star as a Camp Kesem charity runner.

I’ll continue leaning into healthy meals, pacing myself as training volume increases, and centering community—whether through TasteCation meals, family movement, or volunteering at upcoming Run Project races.

Inspiration & Encouragement

If you’re feeling burnt out or need a reason to reset, here are a few small actions that go a long way:

  • Cook one new healthy recipe this week.
  • Invite a friend or family member for a walk or run.
  • Reflect on your “why” before your next big effort—because the why often keeps us going.

Running isn’t just about crossing a finish line—it’s about everything we learn, share, and taste along the way.
