As summer kicks into high gear, the sun shines relentlessly over North Little Elm. For those of us who love to run, the heat can be both a challenge and a motivator. This summer, I’ve made it my mission to stay cool while exploring the shaded trails of Paloma Creek, Union Park, and Savannah, all while my kids—particularly my son, Jaxon—join me on their bikes. Bella, my princess, prefers to sleep in, so it’s just Jaxon and me, ready to tackle the morning.
The Early Morning Routine:
There’s something invigorating about waking up just as the sun begins to rise. The air is fresh, and the world is quiet, creating the perfect environment for a run. I strap on my running shoes, fill my CamelBak with ice-cold water (frozen the night before for maximum chill), and head out the door. Hydration is key during these hot summer runs, and having cold water on hand makes all the difference.
Jaxon, full of energy, eagerly hops on his bike, ready to accompany me on our morning adventure. As we pedal and run together, I cherish these moments of bonding. It’s a time for us to chat about what’s on his mind, share laughs, and enjoy the beauty of the trails.
Discovering Shaded Trails:
One of the best parts about running in North Little Elm is the abundance of shaded trails that provide relief from the sun. Each of the areas we explore has its own unique charm:
- **Paloma Creek**: Known for its scenic beauty, Paloma Creek features well-maintained trails that weave through lush greenery. The trees create a natural canopy, keeping us cooler as we navigate the paths.
- **Union Park**: This area offers winding pathways that are perfect for both running and biking. The shade from the trees not only protects us from the sun but also provides a beautiful backdrop for our adventures.
- **Savannah**: With its mix of trails, Savannah is another favorite spot. The shaded routes make it easy to stay comfortable while enjoying the outdoors, whether we’re running or biking.
Finding these shaded trails is essential for making our summer runs enjoyable. The combination of nature’s beauty and the cool shade makes for a refreshing experience.
The Rewards of Summer Training:
All the training in the summer heat pays off during local events like the Melon Dash and the Too Hot To Handle run around White Rock Lake. The Melon Dash is particularly special, with its delicious watermelon waiting for us at the finish line. After sweating it out on the trails, biting into a juicy slice of watermelon feels like the ultimate reward. It’s a celebration of our hard work, and the camaraderie among participants makes it even more enjoyable.
The Too Hot To Handle run is another highlight of the summer. This event is not just about the race; it’s a lively celebration filled with music, laughter, and post-race festivities. The energy of the participants is contagious, reminding me why I put in the effort to train during the hot summer months.

Embracing the Summer Vibe:
For me, summer is the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time with my family. After our morning runs and bike rides, we often jump into the pool to cool off, relishing the joy that summer brings. The hustle and bustle of family life is vibrant during this season, filled with barbecues and outdoor games that create lasting memories.
I’ve learned that training hard in the summer sets the foundation for success in the months ahead. As one of my favorite motivational speakers, David Goggins, says, “Stay Hard.” This philosophy resonates with me as I push myself to embrace the challenges summer brings. Each run is a reminder that hard work and perseverance lead to greater rewards.
So, as I strap on my shoes for another early morning run, I’m grateful for the shaded trails of North Little Elm and the time spent with Jaxon. Beating the summer heat is all about finding ways to enjoy the outdoors while staying hydrated and safe. With every mile logged and every race completed, I’m reminded that summer is not just a season; it’s an opportunity to thrive, connect, and celebrate the joys of family and fitness. Here’s to finding those shaded trails, staying hydrated, and making the most of the beautiful summer days ahead!
