When it comes to the flu vaccine, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. Is it safe? Does it prevent the flu altogether? Will it cause severe side effects?

We get it, you need the information to make an informed decision. So, let’s bust a few of the myths together!

Myth: If you get the flu shot, you’ll get the flu.

Truth: Not at all. The injected vaccine contains an inactivated virus that can’t give you influenza. Mild symptoms like achiness and a slight fever are normal and typically won’t last more than a day or two.

Myth: The flu shot causes severe side effects.

Truth: Severe side effects are EXTREMELY rare. The flu shot is proven safe and effective for those 6 months and up.

Myth: If you’re pregnant, you shouldn’t get the flu vaccine.

Truth: The flu vaccine protects both mom and baby. In fact, the CDC and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommend all pregnant women get a flu shot, regardless of their trimester. Bonus: The vaccine passes through the placenta and will protect babies until they’re old enough to get a flu shot of their own.

Myth: People 65 and older shouldn’t get the flu shot.

Truth: There are several formulations of the vaccine that can be given to patients 65 and older, including the standard flu vaccine. Our recommendation: Don’t wait for a specific formulation. Get vaccinated as soon as you can!

Myth: You can’t get the flu if you’re already vaccinated.

Truth: There are several influenza viruses circulating all the time, which is why you may still get the flu even if you’re vaccinated. That said, being vaccinated greatly improves your chance of protection and significantly reduces the severity of symptoms that could result in hospitalization.

Myth: You shouldn’t get the flu and COVID-19 vaccine together.

Truth: False! Getting the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine together is both safe and effective. Plus, it’ll save you an extra trip to one of our clinics.

The bottom line: The flu shot is the safest way to protect yourself and the people you love this flu (and holiday) season. Click here to get your shot scheduled or stop in whenever it’s convenient for you. We’re here for you, Dallas-Fort Worth!
